Cover Story: The Hollywood Connection (MARCH – APRIL 2025)!
Nestled in the heart of Arizona’s Verde Valley, where dramatic red rocks pierce the sky and rivers carve through the desert, lies a region that has long captured the imagination of dreamers, artists, and adventurers. From the sultry streets of Jerome to the cinematic vistas of Sedona—once dubbed “Little Hollywood” for its starring role in over 100 films during the golden age of Westerns—this area is a living tapestry of natural beauty and storied pasts. It’s a place where the surreal landscape feels like a movie set, and for good reason: cowboys, creatives, and icons have all been drawn here, leaving their mark on its rugged terrain and vibrant culture.
The Verde Valley isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a magnet for those seeking inspiration, reinvention, or simply a quieter life beneath the shadow of its iconic cliffs. Hollywood’s elite—actors, musicians, filmmakers—have traded the glare of Tinseltown for the glow of Sedona’s sunsets, weaving their legacies into the fabric of this enchanting region. Some came to heal, others to create, and many stayed to forge new frontiers, blurring the lines between fact and folklore as their names echo through the canyons. In this feature, How the West Won Them, we uncover the stories of those who found their muse in this desert oasis—and how it won their hearts in return.
Take Max Ernst, the visionary artist who painted Sedona’s landscapes before ever stepping foot here, or Maynard James Keenan, the rock star-turned-winemaker who’s rooted his multifaceted life in its soil. Then there’s the legacy of Lucille Ball’s family, intertwining Hollywood glamour with Cottonwood’s charm, and countless others whose tales unfold across these pages. Whether it’s the pull of artistic freedom, the promise of peace, or the allure of a real-life Western saga, the Verde Valley proves that the West still holds a timeless magic—one that continues to captivate and transform all who wander its way.

Marie Taylor
