Did you know that your eyes were so fascinating, and so capable? Treat them to an experience by testing them on some large, colorful and abstract paintings by an international artist new to Arizona at a gallery opening in Carefree on February 11, 2017.

Before taking up space in Arizona, Karasek lived, worked and played in the landscapes of England, New Zealand, India, Switzerland and the US, most recently. Texas. His travels inform his talent, and his vision wants to meet with yours.

Karasek’s identity as an artist art began with a natural ability to draw from an early age. He has never stopped. “ I was classically trained at the Royal Academy of Art, London and drew from the model everyday. I love to draw, expressively. Drawing as demonstrated by the great draftsman Leonardo is the arrangement, definition and composition of forms on a flat surface.” Drawing is how he usually begins a painting. And most of them are large.

Since his time as a Swiss resident, he has focused on making large format paintings with oil on canvas and other materials like charcoal, pastels and acrylics in the under-painting. As the painting develops, the rich effect of the oil, water and dust mix and work one against the other. This process allows separate elements to come together. Differentiation, making different elements work together, is a strategy.

Tropical Landscape

As a working artist and professor, he expresses a knowledge of art, setting the bar high for an artist who is making it. The abstract landscapes serve to make one aware of life’s inherent chaos, and its drama and complexity as beautiful and poetic. Of the chaos- to- art he has captured in paint he says: “My paintings are complex.”

The largest of Karasek’s paintings displayed at art/object Gallery and Showroom in Carefree is a triptych from his “Red Desert” series. It’s 18 feet wide. He prefers large canvases because he likes “the physicality of painting.” He says that his eyesight has changed and makes his “optimal painting distance from the canvas about four feet”. This approach lets the viewer enjoy seeing individual brushstrokes, color shapes and canvas texture and how they coalesce from a distance. Also included in the collection are some of his smaller paintings, pastels, watercolors and drawings for more intimate spaces.

Think of Monet’s “Water Lilies” series and what it means to your sense of sight—and your sense of art. Now enjoy the work of Laurence Karasek, a modern master of impressionism and abstraction who lives in this neck of the desert.
