Your Neck

The neck, also known as the cervical spine, consists of seven segments that run from the shoulders to the base of the skull.  The neck supports the weight of the head.  Mobility of the joints of the neck is important for daily function, moving the head to see.  The muscles of the neck move the head and neck and extend from the base of the head to the shoulders and into the middle back.  The nerves in the middle and lower neck are important for the movement and sensation of the arms hands and fingers.  The nerves of the upper neck provide sensation to the head and face.  The anatomy explains the relationship of neck problems with neck pain, neck and arm conditions, and headaches.

Causes of Neck Pain

Common causes of neck pain and associated conditions include postural strain from forward head postures during use of computers, tablets and smart phones.   Injuries sustained in auto accidents, sports injuries and falls.  Often there is an accumulated stress on the cervical muscles and joints until the symptoms of pain and restriction appear to onset suddenly and of no specific event.  The chiropractor will take a thorough history to help determine the likely cause of your neck pain.

Diagnosing your Condition

The history will help determine the examinations needed to help diagnose your condition.  The examinations may include posture, range of motion and orthopedic and neurologic examination.  Chiropractic spinal evaluation can determine segment dysfunction and subluxation.  X-rays or other imaging tests may be ordered if clinically warranted.  The diagnosis can be used to develop a treatment plan.  If chiropractic treatment is appropriate for your condition, chiropractic manipulative therapy, physical therapy procedures and exercise and home care will be recommended and provided.   Plans are typically for a specific number of treatments, over a period of weeks with specific goals to measure progress.   If the condition is better treated by another specialty or concurrent care is warranted, appropriate referral will be made.

Chiropractic treatment is directed towards the improvement of alignment, mobility and function of the joints muscles and nerves of the cervical spine.  Chiropractic manipulative therapy or adjustment is a specific controlled force applied into the joint.  The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands–or an instrument–to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function.  Therapy helps to reduce pain and inflammation of soft tissues.  Exercise and postural habit modification reduce stress and restore normal movement patterns.  The benefits include reduced pain, improved mobility and function, return to normal daily activities.

An important benefit of chiropractic care is a reduced reliance of pain medications for acute and chronic pain.  Chiropractic treatment reduces the risks medication and provides a more effective resolution of the pain.  Keep your body pain-free, moving and healthy by opting for non-drug natural health care.
