Omega 9 Fatty Acids
By Becky Campos

I have dedicated my April, May and June blogs to writing about what I call the Omega Factor.  Understanding the differences between Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids will make all the difference in your personal pursuit of reclaiming your health and preventing disease.  I have covered Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids in my April and May blogs.  We know Omega 6 fatty acids are dangerously over consumed by Americans leading to inflammation in the body and a host of other ill consequences.  Therefore we must lower our intake of Omega 6 fatty acids.  We also know that Americans are not consuming enough of Omega 3 fatty acids which are healthy fats the body needs.  Therefore we must increase Omega 3 fatty acids.  In Today’s blog I want to introduce a few facts about Omega 9 fatty acids which are also healthy fats our body needs for simple health.

Simple health demands that you consume all three of the Omega-fats that God created for us to eat.  The Omega-9 fat is a healthy fat.  It is not usually consumed by Americans in the quantities that balance the other two Omega-3 and 6 fats.  Here are a few facts to consider about Omega-9 fats.

  • Omega-9 fats are healthy fats.
  • Omega-9 fats reduce the breast cancer risk.  As you eliminate omega-6 fats from your every day food and increase your omega-9 fats your breast will accumulate these healthy fats and store them protecting you from free radical formation.
  • Omega-9 fats are found in extra-virgin olive oil, canola oil, avocados, and some nuts.
  • Omega-9 fats are easy to consume and balance the other two fats if consumed in place of omega-6 fats.
  • Omega-9 fats are best when used in salads and baking.
  • Remember that omega-3, 6, and 9 are fats.  They can cause weight gain if you add them to your diet with out reducing your intake of bad fats.  Replacing your bad fats like Trans fats, the over consumption of Omeg-6 fats and man made chemical bound substances like the new alternative spreads is crucial to achieve simple health.
  • Omega-3 and 9 work best in your body when accompanied by plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, grains, natural foods, water, exercise, and fresh air.

Guacamole made with fresh ripe Avocados is one of my favorite ways to consume Omega 9 fatty acids.  Avocados are also rich in protein, have no cholesterol and provide beautiful sources of vitamin A, B’s, C, E.

Minerals (Calcium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil should be used lightly over salads, sautéing on low heat and keeping it to small quantities for flavoring.

Canola oil should be used for baking in small quantities.

In my personal pursuit of reclaiming my health and preventing disease I completely removed Omega 6 fatty acids from my diet until I reclaimed my health and then I re-introduced them into my foods in small quantities.  I replaced Omega 6 fatty acids with Omega 3 and 9 fatty acids.  I am faithful to make sure I am consuming these essential nutrients in my diet.

The Omega Factor will assist you in removing dangerous, unhealthy foods from your diet and replacing them with healthy whole foods that contribute to the process by which food is converted to living tissue.
